An error was detected while verifying the contents

An error with applying the 2.3 patch that was noted in these forums as occurring on the test realm has shown up for me now that 2.3 is live.

http://www.cedega.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=52128

Code:
An error was detected while verifying the contents of the file "C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Data\enUS\backup-enUS.MPQ". There may be a problem with your system, or with the drive at C:\. You can try updating again. If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support.

Running Repair didn't detect or fix any errors.

This is with Engine 5.2.10 winver=Win98.

I'm probably gonna try patching with wine to see if I can at least get it applied.

[update: running under wine gives me the "Waiting for files to close" dialog box.]

I fought with trying to get the wow forums to load and it simply appears that the new BNUpdater no longer works with ME or 98. A blue poster confirmed this. One suggested workaround was to copy the BNUpdater from the previous patch over and run it.

I've tried swapping from 98 to 2000 to XP mode and none have made a difference yet. I'm still looking at other options.

Here's the forum post IF you can get it to load:

1. Update your wine config to advertise nt40
Code:

[Version]
; Windows version to imitate (win95,win98,winme,nt351,nt40,win2k,winxp,win2k3,win20,win30,win31)
"Windows" = "nt40"

2. Run the BNupdate.exe in wine.
3. PROFIT!!!

nt40 doesn't work either. It goes back to the patching error that created the need to swap platforms off 98 to begin with Wink

Yes, with Cedega set to nt40 it doesn't work. I used wine successfully:
wine --version
Wine 20050310

Interesting.

wine --version
wine-0.9.47

Doesn't work.

Recap for me. You replaced the BNUpdate and then ran wine patcher as nt40? or just ran the patcher WITHOUT replacing the BNUpdate?

I did NOT replace the BN update.

From the World of Warcraft directory I ran
wine Patches/WoW-2.2.3-to-2.3.0-enUS-Win-patch/BNUpdate.exe

Now to see what happens when the realms are back up and I can log in.

Yeah I'm not having any luck whatsoever. This really sucks since I've NEVER had patching problems before. I haven't tried any of the wine stuff on my home computer but I might do just that since I've dicked around with so many options on my laptop that I think I might have to reinstall.

Well it appears I was able to get the patch to start at home. Obviously I can't login yet and I can't even tell if it works anyway since VNC doesn't like wine apps.

I'm redownloading the patch from Blizzard at the office anyway instead of grabbing one from a patch mirror. One thing I noticed that REALLY pisses me off is that the patcher downloads FASTER under wine than it does under Cedega. THAT'S a new one for the books.

What worked for me:

first, I used wine. Wine's Windows version was set to NT40.

It gave me a "waiting for files to close" dialog box, but that's because the original game process had still not exited. While the patcher window was still flashing "waiting for files to close," I switched to another workspace, found the first wine/WoW process using ps -ef, (it showed up in the process list as WoW.exe) and killed it with a -1 signal (a regular kill signal did not kill it). At that point the original game client died, the patcher detected that the files were not in use, and it patched normally and successfully.
